Any advice for a game with an 8 editor rating, generally positive feedback, been up for sale 1 month with lots of views but no good bids (less than $500)?
Things we’ve tried:
- Message sponsors we know directly
- Reach out to all arcades we could find through their contact info
- Post on FGL, TalkArcades, MochiMedia
- Updating game with feedback to make it better and get on updated games list
- Wait patiently
Things we’re considering:
- Setting buy it now price to get on steal of the week list
- Quickauction
- Going into last call and hoping for the best (very risky with only 3 sponsors tracking)
- Self-sponsorship (last resort)
Editor rating and positive feedback can be an indicator of quality, but are more often meaningless. Discard that from your mind.
Lots of views + no good bids can either mean a stroke of bad luck, or a game that doesn’t fit the sponsor’s current needs.
Buy it now, quickauctions, and last call will help with the luck thing.
Self sponsorship is your only real option if your game is an overlooked gem… If your game is so kick-ass that it can make tens of thousands on ads, why would you settle for a $500 bid?
If you don’t think your game can make $10K on ads alone, you can’t expect a sponsor to think it will for them either. :)
I’m not sure what your game is so I can’t comment on it specifically, I’m just talking from my own past experience.
Thanks for sharing your experiences, hearing your perspective is super helpful.
Yea I hear ya about the ratings, I just meant it’s a decent effort and not a total piece of crap. I do think the game has the potential to attract a lot of plays (definitely more than $500 worth), but I’m cautious when it comes to self-sponsorship for 2 reasons.
1) A big benefit of a sponsor is that they will promote your game for you, i.e. through prominent placement on the front page. I worry that if I just upload the game a lot of people who would otherwise enjoy it will never even see it in the first place because it’s hidden away in the depths of the new games queue. If we do go down this route, do you have any tips for promoting the game without the site’s help so we can attract potential players and get the site’s attention?
2) Like you say sponsors make advertising money from ads on the site which we won’t get a cut of (with a couple exceptions of course) so won’t it take us a lot more views to make the same amount of money a sponsor could?
