It saddens me to hear there appears to be so much harassment in our group (and that it’s caused some ppl to not want to continue coming to our group events). But I’m glad about the policy you posted for the same reasons you explain in this episode. Hopefully it will help curtail the lameness!
Yeah, it’s really sad to think that there are people out there who got put off of our events by a few jerks. Those people could have been really awesome, and now we’ll never know what they could have added.
I feel bad (and even a bit responsible) for the loss of those folks – for not having better preventative maintenance in place. Hopefully this’ll start turning the tide.
Something people like about my podcasts is that I do one-take recordings, without pre-scripting (which is pretty obvious in this episode!). I find this makes for very natural, casual conversations – as if I were talking to you in real life, over a pint!
But it also has it’s downsides. I have no editing, no backspace, and no feedback co-host to bounce off of. So I make mistakes.
In this episode I particularly butchered my own point by being casually sexist/racist/etc. :( I’m really sorry, particularly for using the words “Girls” and “Females,” using “Minorities” as a noun, the phrase “non-straight people,” and otherwise engaging in some pretty heavy “othering.”
I hope it was clear in the recording that I really was struggling to find the proper words, and the fact that I *was* struggling with this is just going to show how insidious casual -isms in our society really hurt our ability to communicate in general.
Hopefully the rest of my content made it clear what side I was on, and I’ll do a verbal apology in the next episode as well. Just wanted to get this out there early.
