Depression is one of the crappiest things to live with, primarily because there generally is NO reason for it. That’s why it gets classified as a disease/disorder/something official: spontaneous emotional reaction without inciting incident.
I wish I had some good tips to give you.
Totally agree with you. Comes with the job …. anything art/creative/design related … making something (game) from abstracion to final product sets you in that down mood, sooner or later. Asking yourself am I on the right track with this project – or would next one be that peak that sets you up …
I’m sure you know that feeling down is not the domain of game developers, or even content producers, independent or otherwise :)
I think anybody that feels isolated is more likely to get that everything-sucks feeling (my mother called it the PLOMs, the ‘poor little old me’s). Maybe from working independently, or from moving to a new place, or even being isolated from the people you see daily (coworkers, etc).
Isn’t it silly that so many of us feel this from time to time, and yet how often do any of us pick up the phone and call one of our friends (did you call Dan?) and just say…Hey, I need you to care about all my little bullshit for a second, but not give me any advice because I already know how to solve each issue, and then we need to naturally move on to talking about something less depressing, and when I’m done, I’m going to feel like I actually have a social context again…
I think it ought to work, but I still don’t do it!
